There is no such thing as a single ticket to the Pskov Kremlin, and that catches most visitors out. The grounds of the Krom are open 8:00 to 21:00 and you walk in for free. The Prikaznaya Chamber, the wall sections and the two towers are separate tickets, the viewing platform closes two hours earlier in winter, and on the last Tuesday of the month much of the museum is shut.
Getting there
Pskov is the furthest of the comfortable day trips from Saint Petersburg, so the plan hangs on the train. Choose your service on the Russian Railways site and buy the return leg at once, because evening options are thin.
Tickets and hours
The grounds at Kremlin Street 4 open 08:00 to 21:00, with visitors admitted and tickets sold until 20:00. A combined ticket to all kremlin displays — the Prikaznaya Chamber, the wall sections, the Vlasyevskaya and Ploskaya towers — costs 700 roubles for adults, 600 for students.
Both towers open 10:00–20:00 from May to October and 10:00–18:00 from November to April. The Prikaznaya Chamber runs daily 10:00–18:00, tickets until 17:30. The Main Museum Building and the Pogankin Chambers open Tuesday to Sunday 10:30–18:00, closed Monday; a combined ticket with the picture gallery is 1000 or 700 roubles. The 12th-century Mirozhsky Monastery cathedral opens Tuesday to Sunday 11:00–18:00 at 300 or 200. The last Tuesday of the month is a maintenance day almost everywhere.
What to see
The Krom occupies a narrow rocky headland where the Pskova joins the Velikaya, the spot the city grew from. Its southern wall, the Persi, first appears in the chronicle under 1337 and as a stone wall under 1393.
Trinity Cathedral inside is a working church. The vaults of the 12th-century cathedral collapsed in 1363 and a new one went up in 1367. In 1615 the army of Gustavus Adolphus failed to take the fortress; in 1701 Peter the Great had earth ramparts thrown up inside. Dovmont's Town adjoins the Krom from the south, a separately walled quarter whose first stone churches went up under Prince Dovmont; what remains is foundations, laid out like the plan of a vanished town.
A plan that works
Start in the Krom while it is quiet: an hour covers the walls, Trinity Cathedral and Dovmont's Town. Group tours leave daily at 12:00 and 16:00 from the information centre at Kremlin Street 4, 500 roubles for adults and 400 for students. Follow with the Prikaznaya Chamber and the Vlasyevskaya tower, entered from Dovmont's Town, then cross to Nekrasova Street. If the weather is dry, finish at the Mirozhsky Monastery — its cathedral opens only when it is not raining.
