Oreshek Fortress and Shlisselburg: when the crossing to the island closes

The costly mistake on this trip is going in November. Oreshek Fortress stands on an island in the Neva and the only way across is by boat. From 1 November until navigation reopens the museum is closed, because the crossing to the island is not possible. The second most common slip is arriving in October at four in the afternoon: in October the fortress closes an hour earlier than in summer, and the ticket desk half an hour before that.

Getting there

Orekhovy Island sits where the Neva leaves Lake Ladoga, inside the town of Shlisselburg in Leningrad Region. There is no road to it. Two piers serve the island: Shlisselburg on the left bank, and Morozov settlement — the village of Sheremetyevka — on the right. The ferry number is +7 (911) 920-21-69, worth calling on the day. Suburban buses and trains reach Shlisselburg; check the timetable before you set off.

Tickets and hours

The fortress is open from 26 April to 31 October. From 1 May to 30 September it works 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 10:00–19:00 at weekends and on public holidays. From 1 to 31 October the hours are 10:00–17:00 on weekdays and 10:00–18:00 at weekends. The ticket desk closes half an hour before the fortress.

Admission is 400 roubles for adults and 200 for students of Russian universities and Russian pensioners. The boat is charged separately: the Shlisselburg–island–Shlisselburg route costs 600 roubles for an adult, 500 for pupils, students and pensioners, and 400 for children aged one to six. That makes an adult day 1000 roubles before the cost of reaching Shlisselburg. On 9 May entry is free for all visitors.

What to see

Oreshek is a branch of the State Museum of the History of Saint Petersburg. What survives are walls, towers and ruins, and here the ruins carry more than any reconstruction would: damage from the fighting of the Second World War has been left as it is. The two prisons are the main displays — the Old Prison, known as the Secret House, and the New Prison, which covers the People's Will revolutionaries held here between 1884 and 1906.

A plan that works

Leave in the morning and aim to be in Shlisselburg when the crossing starts. The island is small: three to four hours covers the displays, the walls and an unhurried look at the ruins. Plan the return boat with at least an hour in hand before closing, because the ferry does not run to the last minute and wind can shift the schedule.
