Most day trippers to Veliky Novgorod get the order wrong. They arrive around lunchtime and start with a walk along the walls. The walls are not the problem — entry to the kremlin grounds is free, gates open 6:00 to 24:00. The museums inside close at 18:00 or 19:00, and the best of them shuts all day on Tuesday. Plan around opening hours, not around the view.
Getting there
Novgorod lies south-east of Saint Petersburg and morning trains run there. Times shift with the season, so pick your train on the Russian Railways site and book the return leg at the same time. From the station, bus No. 7 leaves Vokzalnaya Square for the kremlin.
Tickets and hours
The grounds are free, 6:00 to 24:00. Saint Sophia Cathedral opens 08:00 to 20:00, with services at 10:00 and 18:00 except Monday and Tuesday; it is a working cathedral, so women need covered head and shoulders and men need trousers.
The Main Museum Building at Kremlin 4 opens Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 10:00–18:00, Friday to Sunday 10:00–19:00, closed Tuesday and on the last Thursday of the month. Tickets are 300 roubles for citizens of Russia and Belarus, 500 full, free under 14. The Faceted Chamber at Kremlin 14 opens 10:00–18:00, closed Monday and the last Wednesday of the month, at 400 or 700 roubles. The wall walk at Kremlin 5 runs daily 10:00–18:00 at 300 or 500 roubles.
What to see
The kremlin, locally the Detinets, is one of the largest medieval fortresses in north-west Russia. Its walls and towers mostly date from the end of the 15th century, when Ivan III had the old fortress pulled down and a new one raised on its foundations.
Saint Sophia Cathedral is the oldest church in Russia, built 1045–1050 for Prince Vladimir, son of Yaroslav the Wise. The central dome was first gilded in 1408. Inside are the 12th-century icon of Our Lady of the Sign and the bronze Korsun Gates of the 11th century. The Faceted Chamber was built in the 1430s and 1440s with German masters, in a Gothic style rare in Russia. The Millennium of Russia monument was unveiled on 8 September 1862 before Alexander II.
A plan that works
Take an early train and be on Sofiyskaya Square when the museums open. Give 10:00 to 12:00 to the Main Building, half an hour to the cathedral, then the Faceted Chamber and the wall walk after lunch. The museum budgets four hours for the kremlin. Vitoslavlitsy, the open-air museum outside town, needs three more, so treat it as an alternative rather than an extra.
