Short answer: Peterhof in winter is worth the trip for the Grand Palace and an empty park, and not worth it if you came for the fountains. The water is drained before the first hard frosts, the hydrofoils stop running, and in December the sun sets at four. In exchange, the Lower Park — the priciest ticket in Peterhof all summer — becomes free.
Dates below are checked against the museum's site on 2 October 2026. The winter timetable is published as a separate announcement each year; last season it appeared on 4 November. Anything marked «last season» shows the mechanics, not 2026/27.
When the fountains stop
The autumn fountain festival ran on 26–27 September 2026, but that event is not the shutdown. On the museum's site the Lower Park season runs 25 April to 18 October 2026, daily 09:00–20:00, fountains 10:00–19:45. It can be extended: last year the museum announced on 1 October that fountains would run until 4 November on a shorter 10:00–18:00 schedule. A steady freeze decides it.
The park becomes free
The Lower Park now costs 900 ₽ on weekdays and 1 100 ₽ at weekends for Russian and EAEU citizens, 2 000–2 500 ₽ at the full rate. The museum's 2026 pricing statement says parks are free in winter. Last season the switch came on 5 November: fountains off, Lower Park and Upper Garden free, 09:00–18:00. The Upper Garden is free all year. See our autumn fountain guide.
Closed until spring
- Monplaisir Palace — closed for restoration, works running since December 2023.
- Marly Palace — closed for restoration.
- Imperial Yachts Museum and the Aviaries — already closed for the winter.
- Grottoes of the Grand Cascade — open now (11:00–18:00, 600 ₽), but they belong to the fountain system and were absent from last winter's timetable.
- The trick fountains go with the water. If small children are the reason for the trip, come back in summer.
What stays open, and its day off
2026 winter prices for Russian and EAEU citizens: Grand Palace 1 000 ₽, Grand Menshikov Palace 800 ₽, Katalnaya Gorka Pavilion 600 ₽, Cottage Palace and Farm Palace 500 ₽. The Special Treasury and the Church Wing, both inside the Grand Palace, cost 500 ₽, open 10:30–18:00, last entry 17:00.
Last season's pattern: Grand Palace closed Mondays; Special Treasury closed Mondays and the last Tuesday of the month; Menshikov Palace closed Tuesdays and the last Wednesday, timed entry only; and the smaller museums — Catherine Wing, Bath Wing, Playing Card House, Cottage, Farm Palace, Telegraph Station — open at weekends only, 10:30–17:00. So Peterhof on a winter Monday is a free park and nothing else.
Getting there without the hydrofoil
Boats run only to the end of September. Overland, from the museum's own page: a suburban train from Baltiysky station to Novy Petergof, then 10 minutes on bus 351А, 351Б, 352, 356, 463 or 489; buses 200, 204э, 210 from Avtovo metro; buses 103, 343э and minibus К-639Б from Prospekt Veteranov.
Fares in 2026: suburban trains inside the city boundary are a flat 65 ₽, Lastochka included. Surface transport is 88 ₽ single, 65 ₽ with a Podorozhnik card; the metro 95 ₽ and 65 ₽. The train takes 35–41 minutes every 15–30 minutes, so the station-to-gates trip is about an hour. Buses along Peterhof Highway are the gamble. If a boat booking has already collapsed, read what to do when the Meteor is cancelled.
Three winter risks
- Darkness. Sunset is 17:08 on 1 November, 16:35 on 15 November, 16:00 on 21 December, when daylight lasts six hours. Be inside the park by 11:00.
- Ice. The park sits on a terrace: every path from the Grand Cascade down to the gulf is a descent, and a thaw glazes them. Bring boots with grip; skip that descent with a pram.
- Wind off the gulf. No shelter between palace and shore, and several park cafés shut in the off-season.
Do this first
Check the museum's winter timetable, pick one palace as the goal, buy that ticket online, take a morning train. Do not add a second museum without checking whether it opens on weekdays. Avoid Mondays, and avoid travelling back at 17:30–19:00.
