The Peterhof fountains are not plumbing but an eighteenth-century gravity-fed system, and it is shut down for the winter. That makes the question of when to come sharper here than at any other palace outside St Petersburg: arriving to find the fountains off is entirely possible.
Below is what the museum has officially announced as of 1 September — and, just as usefully, what it has not.
Opening hours
The Grand Cascade and the Lower Park are open daily from 09:00 to 19:00.
In September that argues for an early start. In June the park stays usable late because the sky is still light; by late September it is dusk at seven, and you have noticeably less time than the timetable suggests.
26 and 27 September: the autumn festival
The big event of the closing season is the autumn fountain festival "Happiness", on Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September.
On those two days the Lower Park stays open from 10:00 to 21:00, with last entry at 20:20 — the only chance in the year to see the park after dark.
Each day ends with a multimedia show and fireworks over the Grand Cascade. The 2026 edition is built around the theme of childhood and marks the 200th anniversary of Alexandria Park, with themed installations across the grounds.
Which means: book ahead. Two evenings a year with the park open until nine is an obvious demand peak, and buying at the gate is not a plan.
About the closing date — honestly
The museum has not published the date the fountains will be switched off. It is announced closer to the time, and any figure circulating now reflects somebody's memory of a previous year rather than a schedule.
So the only reliable approach is to treat September as guaranteed, October as likely, and to watch for the museum's announcement if your trip falls late in the autumn.
The same applies to prices: tickets are sold only through the museum's own box office, and we do not quote figures the site does not publish.
Getting there without a car
Two routes, both from the museum's own directions.
By bus from Avtovo metro. To the "Fontany" stop (Pravlenskaya Street) or "Razvodnaya Street". Minibus K-639B, buses 103 and 343e.
By suburban train. To Novy Peterhof station, then ten minutes on buses 351A, 351B, 352, 356, 463 or 489.
The train is usually the more predictable of the two: the bus from Avtovo sits in the same traffic as everyone else, and on September weekends the Peterhof highway is busy.
There is also the Meteor hydrofoil, but it depends on the navigation season and does not always run at the end of it — check on the day.
