Two imperial estates on the same railway line, half an hour apart. On a short trip you usually have to pick one — and the choice is simpler than it looks.
The short version: Tsarskoye Selo is about the palace, Pavlovsk is about the park. Everything else follows from that.
The core difference
You go to Tsarskoye Selo to step inside. The Catherine Palace, with its enfilade of state rooms and the Amber Room, is what draws visitors from across the world. The park around it is lovely, but it is an accompaniment to the palace rather than the other way round. The same estate holds the Alexander Palace — a quieter, more domestic residence, and the last home of the imperial family.
You go to Pavlovsk to walk. Pavlovsk Park is a monument of landscape art from the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and that is not a polite formula: this is where Charles Cameron first applied the principles of the new landscape architecture, with Vincenzo Brenna and Pietro Gonzaga shaping it later. The park spreads along both banks of the Slavyanka and is divided into districts with distinct characters — New Sylvia was laid out to preserve the feeling of genuine forest, while the Red Valley continues the river valley itself.
The palace at Pavlovsk is open too, and it is noticeably more intimate than the one at Tsarskoye Selo: a gold-and-white building on the high bank of the Slavyanka, a flat dome resting on sixty-four columns, curved galleries closing a courtyard into a horseshoe. Its collections were gathered by the owners of Pavlovsk during their European journey of 1781–1782 — commissioned and bought from the workshops themselves, not seized — and the house feels like it.
Which one suits you
First time in St Petersburg, one estate for the whole trip. Tsarskoye Selo. The Amber Room is a case where the reputation is earned, and missing it on a single visit tends to nag afterwards.
You want quiet and open air. Pavlovsk, without hesitation. Tsarskoye Selo is busy in season and the palace moves visitors through in a stream; at Pavlovsk the crowd dissolves ten minutes' walk from the entrance.
You care about court history and interiors. Tsarskoye Selo, by a wide margin.
Travelling with small children. Pavlovsk: they can run, feed the squirrels and wander, and nobody has to watch that they don't touch an exhibit.
You dislike queues. Pavlovsk. Entry to the Amber Room runs in timed sessions, and in high season the wait is real.
Autumn. Pavlovsk is one of those parks worth timing a trip around — late September, early October. A landscape park is designed for exactly that season.
How much time to allow
- Tsarskoye Selo, palace and Catherine Park: four to five hours including travel.
- Tsarskoye Selo with the Alexander Park: a full day.
- Pavlovsk, park only: three to four hours — and even then you will not cover all of it in one visit.
- Pavlovsk with the palace: five to six hours.
These two, unlike others, do combine
This is the practical difference from pairing an estate with Peterhof, which is not worth attempting in a single day. Tsarskoye Selo and Pavlovsk sit on the same railway line at neighbouring stops, and one bus — route 299 from Moskovskaya metro station — serves both. Moving between them takes minutes, not half a day.
A workable full-day plan: the palace at Tsarskoye Selo in the morning, the park at Pavlovsk after lunch. That order matters — palaces close well before dark, and a park is at its best in the late light. Reverse it and you will arrive at locked doors.
If you only have one day and would rather not split it, take one and take it slowly. Both places are built so that a rushed visit costs you precisely the thing you came for.
Getting there
To Tsarskoye Selo: a suburban train from Vitebsky station or from the Kupchino platform to Tsarskoye Selo station, then a 25–30 minute walk or buses 370, 376, 378 and 382 to the "Sadovaya Street — Catherine Palace" stop. From Kupchino metro, buses 186 and 342; from Moskovskaya, bus 299 to the same stop, or bus 187 to the Egyptian Gates and about fifteen minutes on foot.
To Pavlovsk: a suburban train from Vitebsky station to Pavlovsk station. From Moskovskaya metro, buses and minibuses 545, 299 and 252; from Zvyozdnaya, 363 and bus 179; from Kupchino, 521.
With children, in a group, or in the shoulder season when daylight is short and changing trains eats the day, booking a car is simply easier — door to park gate and back. Request a transfer and carriers will quote for your date.
Opening hours, closing days, the season for park pavilions and the way Amber Room tickets are sold all change from year to year. Check the official sites before you travel: Tsarskoye Selo at tzar.ru, Pavlovsk at pavlovskmuseum.ru. On a full-day trip, a mistake about the timetable is an expensive one.
The short answer
One estate and a first visit to the city — Tsarskoye Selo. Quiet, autumn or children — Pavlovsk. A whole day and the energy for it — take both, starting with the palace.
