If you have exactly one day, arguing about which is more beautiful gets you nowhere — both are. In autumn the decision turns on something else: Peterhof rests on its fountains, and the fountains are seasonal. Tsarskoye Selo works all year, and its parks open at seven in the morning.

What you lose by not going now

At Peterhof, everything. The fountains run on an eighteenth-century gravity system that is shut down for the winter, and the museum has not yet announced the closing date. September is safe, October likely, beyond that a gamble.

At Tsarskoye Selo, nothing. The Catherine and Alexander parks are open from 07:00 to 21:00, and that is not a seasonal timetable. The palaces stay open year-round too.

Which gives the answer that settles it for most visitors: with a single day, go to Peterhof and leave Tsarskoye Selo for another trip. It will still be there; the fountains will not.

Opening hours

Peterhof. The Lower Park and Grand Cascade, daily 09:00 to 19:00. The exception: on 26 and 27 September, during the autumn festival, the park stays open until 21:00 with last entry at 20:20, and both evenings close with a show and fireworks over the Grand Cascade.

Tsarskoye Selo. Parks 07:00 to 21:00. Catherine Palace, route 1: 10:00 to 16:45. Alexander Palace: 10:00 to 18:00. The Cameron Gallery: 11:00 to 19:00.

Note the gap: the palace closes at 16:45 while the park runs until nine. Arriving at three and seeing everything is not possible — the palace needs the morning, the park takes the rest.

What is closed right now

Catherine Palace route 1 is closed on 5 September. The park stays open that day.

The Alexander Palace is temporarily inaccessible to visitors with reduced mobility and to those with prams — worth knowing before you travel rather than at the door.

On 12 September Tsarskoye Selo holds its family festival "Apple Noon" in the historic orangery complex: a plus if you are bringing children, but expect bigger crowds.

Money, and where children change the answer

Here Tsarskoye Selo wins outright.

Children under 14 enter the Catherine Park free, every day, regardless of citizenship. Not under seven, not weekdays only, not residents only.

Children under 7 are free at every site of the museum reserve, again regardless of citizenship. Pensioners enter the Catherine Park free.

There are also reductions for Russian tax residents and citizens of the Eurasian Economic Union states, claimed with a document or a digital ID.

Peterhof sells tickets only through its own box office and does not publish prices on the site, so we quote none. The structure differs, though: entry to the Lower Park is paid for all adults, and that is exactly the ticket the fountains require.

Choosing

One day before the season ends. Peterhof — the fountains are the only thing that cannot wait.

Travelling with children under 14 on a budget. Tsarskoye Selo: the park costs them nothing.

You want to walk, not queue. Tsarskoye Selo, arriving at seven, when the park is nearly empty.

26 or 27 September. Peterhof: two evenings a year with the park open until nine.

5 September. Not Tsarskoye Selo, if the palace was the point.
