Rental e-scooters are everywhere in Saint Petersburg — three operators, Whoosh, Yurent and Yandex Go, run tens of thousands of them. The trap for visitors is that the city adds its own layer of rules on top of the national traffic code, and the strictest part of it covers exactly the area tourists want to ride through.
You cannot end a ride in the historic centre
Parking a rental scooter is banned in the four central districts: Tsentralny, Admiralteysky, Vasileostrovsky and Petrogradsky. You may ride through them, but the app will not let you finish the rental there, and the meter keeps running until you reach a marked parking point. Around forty virtual parking spots sit on the district borders for exactly this purpose. Plan your last stop before you set off, or you will end up pushing the scooter on foot while paying by the minute.
No-go zones and slow zones
The city's agreement with the operators sets 36 zones where riding is banned outright, 175 locations capped at 15 km/h and seven capped at 10 km/h. Nevsky Prospekt, the Summer Garden, the Mikhailovsky Garden, Kirov Central Park, the 300th Anniversary Park and the Peterhof estate are all on the list. In a slow zone the scooter simply stops accelerating — you cannot override it.
Zone boundaries move. Before Victory Day in May the operators temporarily closed all four central districts plus the Moskovsky district and part of Frunzensky because of parade rehearsals and road closures. Check the map in the app before every ride, not once a season.
