A visitor books a place advertised as "seven minutes from Nevsky Prospekt", arrives, and finds one room with a single window facing a narrow courtyard shaft, a lamp burning at noon, and three other families sharing the corridor. Nothing in the listing was false. Here the address tells you far less than the floor, the windows and the bridges standing between you and your bed.

The real question

Not "central or not", but how often you will come home and how late. If you leave in the morning and return near midnight, the centre earns its price. If you have a child who naps, a quiet street with a lift matters more than the distance to Palace Square.

The central districts

Between the Neva, the Fontanka and the Obvodny Canal you can live without transport at all: the Hermitage, St Isaac's, the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood and the Mariinsky are a twenty-minute walk apart. You pay twice, in money and in noise. Windows facing Nevsky or Sadovaya mean traffic around the clock, and old buildings often have single-pane glass. Look for a side street, and ask which floor you are on.

Petrogradskaya and Vasilyevsky: the bridge problem

The Petrograd Side and Vasilyevsky Island are calmer and often cheaper, but the Neva separates them from the centre and it opens at night. In the official 2026 schedule published by Mostotrest, the Troitsky Bridge is closed to traffic from 1:20 to 4:50, the Palace Bridge from 1:10 to 2:50 and again from 3:10 to 4:55, and the Birzhevoy and Tuchkov bridges from 2:00 to 2:50 and from 3:35 to 4:50. A taxi at two in the morning takes a long detour, or refuses the trip.

Near the station and the airport

Moskovsky railway station sits directly on Nevsky Prospekt, which suits anyone travelling by train. For an early flight, the Moskovsky district is better: Pulkovo's bus routes 39 and 39E run to Moskovskaya metro station, another route serves Prospekt Veteranov, and a kiosk selling city transport passes stands by the bus stop outside the terminal. The airport's official taxi partner is Yandex Go, with round-the-clock desks in the baggage hall; the airport advises against drivers who approach passengers inside.

What "apartment" can mean

It may be a whole flat, a studio in a serviced apart-hotel, or a single room in a kommunalka — a shared flat where the kitchen and bathroom belong to everyone on the corridor. Listings mention this in one line at the bottom, if at all. Ask directly how many people use the kitchen, where the windows face, and whether a Neva bridge stands between you and the city centre.
