An Indian summer in St Petersburg is not a season but a handful of unpredictable warm days. The only workable strategy is to know in advance what has a deadline, and to spend the first warm day on exactly that.
First to go: the Peterhof fountains
The shortest window belongs to the Lower Park. The fountains run on an eighteenth-century gravity system that is shut down for winter, and the museum has not announced the date.
The park is open daily 09:00 to 19:00. One exception: on 26 and 27 September it stays open until 21:00, last entry 20:20, with a show and fireworks over the Grand Cascade both evenings — the only two days a year you can see the park after dark.
The bridges: until 30 November
Navigation on the Neva runs from 10 April to 30 November, so bridge openings continue for another three months. But watching them is comfortable only now: the Palace Bridge first rises at 1:10, and standing by the water for an hour in October is a different experience entirely.

The gardens: open until ten, closed Tuesdays
The Summer Garden and the Mikhailovsky Garden are open 10:00 to 22:00, closed on Tuesdays.
Twelve hours is generous, and on a warm September evening both empty out by eight. That is exactly when to go: in summer it is still bright and busy at that hour, while in September the dusk clears the crowds.
The suburbs: parks stay open longest
At Tsarskoye Selo the Catherine and Alexander parks are open 07:00 to 21:00, year-round rather than seasonally.
Seven in the morning is the underused number: in September sunrise falls about then, and the park is nearly empty for the first hours.
Another reason to go there with children: under-14s enter the Catherine Park free, every day, regardless of citizenship. Under-7s are free at every site of the reserve, and pensioners enter the Catherine Park free.
Two September dates: the Catherine Palace (route 1) is closed on 5 September, though the park stays open, and 12 September brings the family festival "Apple Noon" in the orangery complex.
The rain plan
Rain starts here without warning, so a fallback is essential.
The Kunstkamera is open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 18:00, last entry 17:00, closed Mondays and on the last Tuesday of the month.
The useful part: the third Thursday of the month is a free-entry day for individual visitors, and it runs from September to April. September is the first month it resumes; the next one falls on 17 September.
How to use this
First warm day — Peterhof. The fountains have the shortest deadline.
Warm evening — the Summer Garden after eight. Not on a Tuesday.
Warm morning with children — Tsarskoye Selo at seven; the park costs them nothing.
Warm night — the bridges. November openings are the same on paper, but you will not want to stand there.
Rain — the Kunstkamera, and on 17 September it is free.
