On 5 October 2026 the KVS group, owner of the former Kresty complex on Arsenalnaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg, approved the concept of a future museum and released the first renderings. Under the plan, the museum will take up the entire underground floor of wing No. 1 of one of the cross-shaped buildings. No opening date has been announced.
The complex is closed to visitors right now: guided tours ran from March to September 2026 and were then suspended so the site could be prepared for reconstruction. The red-brick ensemble and its church domes are, however, easy to see from the opposite bank of the Neva.
What the museum plan includes
The exhibition is built around two storylines, «The Person» and «The System». The first follows the lives of people connected with Kresty; the second explains how the institution worked — its rules, restrictions and daily routine. Documents, everyday objects of staff and inmates and other historical evidence will be combined with multimedia.
- Role-based routes: visitors choose a perspective, and the same rooms are presented differently depending on the scenario.
- Lecture hall: educational programmes, including for students training as lawyers and forensic specialists.
- Still to be revealed: route details, part of the multimedia and how the museum theme will extend into the grounds.
Why Kresty matters as architecture
The complex was built in red brick in the 1880s and early 1890s to a design by architect Antony Tomishko. Its two five-storey main buildings are cross-shaped in plan, which gave the place its name. The landmark of the ensemble is the five-domed Church of St Alexander Nevsky on the top floor of one of the buildings; its crosses were restored to the domes in January 2004.
In February 2026 the city heritage committee listed the ensemble as a regional monument, protecting 15 buildings, including both cross-shaped blocks, the church, the wardens' house, bathhouse, kitchen and hospital.
