Driving into central St Petersburg means driving into a paid parking zone. Four districts — Tsentralny, Admiralteysky, Petrogradsky and Vasileostrovsky — are covered: 652 stretches of kerb and over 48,000 marked bays. There is no free spot "right by the cathedral", so choose your parking point and payment method before you set off.
Rates are dynamic. Since October 2025 the hourly price for a car depends on how full the street already is: 100 ₽ per hour where occupancy is under 50%, 200 ₽ at 50–70%, 280 ₽ at 70–85% and 360 ₽ above 85%. A street two blocks off the main route can cost a third of the one beside the palace.
When you pay
Kerbside parking is charged daily from 08:00 to 20:00, weekends and holidays included. From 20:01 to 07:59 it is free for everyone. Per-minute billing starts only from the second hour, and unused time is never refunded. Fenced municipal car parks work differently: they are charged around the clock, and since late March 2026 the five busiest ones in the centre cost 200 ₽ per hour.
Where to leave the car
- Hermitage and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood — municipal car park at Konyushennaya Square, plot 1, 200 ₽ per hour, open 24/7, between the Moika and the Griboedov Canal;
- St Isaac's Cathedral — Kazan Square, plot 4, 200 ₽ per hour, then a short walk along the Moika. The cathedral has no car park of its own;
- Peter and Paul Fortress — a visitors' car park inside the fortress itself (Petropavlovskaya Krepost 3, building 4D), open daily 09:00–21:00. Check the rate at the barrier; in summer the queue to get in and out is real;
- All day or overnight — the Galeria mall car park by Moskovsky station, entrance from Ligovsky Prospekt: 300 ₽ for the first 30 minutes, 700 ₽ for the first 3 hours, 200 ₽ per hour after that; a 24-hour pass costs 2,000 ₽ and is arranged in advance at the car park office.
Paying without a Russian banking app
You have 15 minutes after parking to start a session and 10 minutes to leave once your paid time ends. Commission-free options: the "Parkovki Sankt-Peterburga" app, an SMS to 3065, the parking.spb.ru website, or a street pay machine. Machines take bank cards only, no cash, and the keypad is Latin — white keys for Russian plates, yellow for foreign ones.
Two local quirks. Mobile internet is occasionally restricted here; the official app and website stay reachable, but banking apps may not, so top up the parking account in advance. And GPS sometimes drifts, so check the zone number on the street sign instead of trusting the map. A wrong zone or plate can be corrected once, before the end of the same day.
