Between Strelna and Peterhof the Peterhof Road passes estates that thousands of buses drive by every day. Znamenka is the largest of them: the palace of Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, brother of Alexander II, an eighteenth-century church, stables for hundreds of horses and a park running down to the gulf. There is no museum and the palace is closed, but the grounds are open to walk — half an hour of quiet before the Peterhof crowds.

From the Shuvalovs to the grand duke

Znamenka has been known since Peter's time; in the eighteenth century it belonged to the Razumovskys and the Myatlevs, who built the church of Saints Peter and Paul. In 1835 Nicholas I bought it for his son, Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolaevich, and according to the Citywalls database the architect Harald Bosse rebuilt the palace in the 1850s–1860s in neo-Baroque forms — projecting bays, mouldings, balconies facing the gulf. The grand duke was a passionate horseman, and the stable block built for him is the size of the palace, one of the largest in the suburbs.

What to see

The palace is three storeys with a central bay and a turret, its main facade turned to the gulf. In Soviet times it was a sanatorium; it is now closed, and the facades are viewed from the park. Beside it stands the church of Saints Peter and Paul, 1770s, with a bell tower, still in use.

The stable block is a long building with towers echoing the palace; it housed services for decades and is in mixed condition. The park descends in terraces from the palace to the shore, with old oaks and traces of the alleys.

Getting in

Znamenka is not a museum and access has varied: in some years the grounds were open, in others behind a barrier. Usually the park and the church are accessible; the palace is luck. Tour operators include Znamenka in Peterhof Road itineraries with Mikhailovka and Strelna — with a group, entry is easier.

Neighbours: Mikhailovka and Strelna

Two kilometres east is Mikhailovka, the estate of another brother of Alexander II, Mikhail Nikolaevich, with a palace and church, now a business school campus. Further on is Strelna with the Konstantinovsky Palace. These three plus Peterhof make a full day along the Peterhof Road.

Getting there

Buses and minibuses to Peterhof from Avtovo and Leninsky Prospekt metro stop at Znamenka — ask for the stop by name. By train, go to Novy Peterhof and take a bus back. For a day of three estates plus Peterhof, a car is easier: a transfer that waits can be booked via RideClu, and you do not lose an hour at bus stops between Strelna, Mikhailovka, Znamenka and Peterhof.

Where to stay

To stay by the gulf rather than commute from the city, Peterhof and Strelna have apartments and guesthouses for a few nights, bookable on Tutkakdoma. From Peterhof, Znamenka is ten minutes by bus.

Not for you if you expect a museum with a ticket office and a guide — here is a closed palace and a park. For seeing the Peterhof Road without the crowd, Znamenka is the best stop.
