On 5 October 2026 the KVS group, owner of the former Kresty complex on Arsenalnaya Embankment in Saint Petersburg, approved the concept of a future museum and released the first renderings. Under the plan, the museum will take up the entire underground floor of wing No. 1 of one of the cross-shaped buildings. No opening date has been announced.

The complex is closed to visitors right now: guided tours ran from March to September 2026 and were then suspended so the site could be prepared for reconstruction. The red-brick ensemble and its church domes are, however, easy to see from the opposite bank of the Neva.

What the museum plan includes

The exhibition is built around two storylines, «The Person» and «The System». The first follows the lives of people connected with Kresty; the second explains how the institution worked — its rules, restrictions and daily routine. Documents, everyday objects of staff and inmates and other historical evidence will be combined with multimedia.

Why Kresty matters as architecture

The complex was built in red brick in the 1880s and early 1890s to a design by architect Antony Tomishko. Its two five-storey main buildings are cross-shaped in plan, which gave the place its name. The landmark of the ensemble is the five-domed Church of St Alexander Nevsky on the top floor of one of the buildings; its crosses were restored to the domes in January 2004.

In February 2026 the city heritage committee listed the ensemble as a regional monument, protecting 15 buildings, including both cross-shaped blocks, the church, the wardens' house, bathhouse, kitchen and hospital. What else is planned and when

The museum is part of a wider conversion approved by the city heritage council in December 2025: a fully pedestrian site with two hotels, a food street and a promenade with art objects, with the church remaining the dominant feature. The developer has estimated the investment at about 15 billion roubles and the project term at about five years.

The state heritage review ran from 14 April to 1 July 2026. According to the city investment committee, construction dates and phased opening will be set only after design work and approvals are complete. Treat any opening year you see as speculation until the owner announces it.

Can you see it now

Not inside. From outside, the walls and buildings face Arsenalnaya Embankment, and the best overall view is from Voskresenskaya Embankment across the river. There, between houses 12 and 14, stands the monument to poet Anna Akhmatova, turned towards Kresty, with Mikhail Shemyakin's «Sphinxes» memorial nearby. Combine both banks into one walk — ideas in our guide to the most beautiful embankments.

What to do first

Go to Voskresenskaya Embankment by the Akhmatova monument, ideally in evening light, and look across at Tomishko's ensemble. Do not look for tickets: there are no tours or museum sales at the moment. Follow updates from the KVS group and the city investment committee.
