You booked a timed ticket to a museum in St Petersburg, then your train was late, your child got sick, or you simply mixed up the dates. Can you get your money back? Usually yes — but only if you act early, and the deadline is much earlier than most visitors assume.
The federal refund ladder
Refunds for museum tickets, season passes and guided-tour vouchers are governed by Article 52.1 of the Fundamentals of Russian Legislation on Culture. If you cancel for your own reasons, the amount depends on how many days are left before the date on the ticket: ten days or more — 100 % of the ticket price; less than ten but at least five days — no less than 50 %; less than five but at least three days — no less than 30 %; less than three days — the museum may keep everything. For a season pass, the relevant date is the first event it covers, and a single missed session is never refunded.
How the big four actually handle it
The Hermitage states that visitors may return tickets no later than three days before the visit date, and that e-tickets are refunded only to the person who paid for them on the museum website. The museum sells e-tickets one to four weeks ahead and box-office tickets for the current day only — an explicit anti-scalping measure. Published main-category prices: Main Museum Complex 1200–500 roubles, General Staff Building 700, Winter Palace of Peter the Great and Menshikov Palace 1500 each, Staraya Derevnya 2000, Imperial Porcelain Factory Museum 500.
The Russian Museum requires an application at least three full calendar days in advance, sent in person, by registered mail or to [email protected] with the ticket and the receipt attached. It notifies you of a positive decision within three calendar days and pays out within ten.
Peterhof follows the federal ladder literally and refunds only to the bank card used for payment, within ten calendar days; the clock starts when your application reaches the museum, not when you changed your mind.
Tsarskoye Selo hides the sharpest trap. Under its published refund rules, entrance tickets to the main exhibition of the Catherine Palace are valid for one hour from purchase and cannot be returned or exchanged. Tickets to pavilions, temporary exhibitions and the park are bought on the spot and are also non-refundable. E-tickets can be cancelled by writing to [email protected] no later than three days before the date for a full refund — but only for the whole order, since partial refunds are not possible.
