Kronstadt in a day from St Petersburg: buses, forts and the cathedral

The usual mistake with Kronstadt is treating it as a half-day trip. People arrive at lunchtime, walk Anchor Square, look at the Naval Cathedral and leave — never reaching the Island of Forts at the opposite end of town.

Kronstadt is Kotlin Island, joined to the mainland by the flood barrier dam. Give it a full day.

Getting there across the dam

Buses run all year and do not depend on the shipping season. The official Island of Forts site lists three:

From "16th Quarter" it is a 10–15 minute walk along Tsitadelskaya Road. By car, the address is 14 Tsitadelskoye Shosse.

In the shipping season, fast catamarans cross from the Palace Pier in about an hour. In autumn this depends on the weather, and operators do not publish the date of the last sailing in advance — check before you set out.

The Island of Forts

Entry to the museum and history park is free for everyone — the organisers say so explicitly. Inside are the Avenue of Russian Navy Heroes, a Lighthouse of Memory carrying 200 sailors' names, panoramic swings over the Gulf of Finland, a stone garden, an apple orchard with a pond, a skate park and a food court. The rope park is paid, opens at weekends from 11:00 to 20:00, and shuts in strong wind or rain.

One caveat on hours: a notice on the park page says 09:00–21:00, while the rules section says 09:00–23:00 with last entry at 22:00. The notice looks more current, but check before an evening visit.

The Museum of Naval Glory is the centrepiece, built around the K-3 Leninsky Komsomol — the first Soviet nuclear submarine, which crossed the North Pole twice in 1962 — displayed indoors in an atrium.

Anchor Square and the Naval Cathedral

The Naval Cathedral of St Nicholas dominates Anchor Square and is visible from the dam long before you arrive. It is a working church, and its official site could not be read when we checked — confirm service and visiting times directly before you go.

Around the square sits the Central Naval Museum's "Kronstadt Fortress" branch — an artillery ground at 2D Anchor Square and the Italian Palace at 3 Makarovskaya Street, with the Popov memorial hall and a display of navy diving gear.

Do not come on a Monday: both museums are shut. The fortress branch also closes on Tuesdays and stops admitting visitors at 17:15, well before its stated 18:00 closing time.

The Naval Cathedral's own site could not be read at the time of checking, so its schedule is not given here. Checked on 15 September 2026.
