Eating cheaply in Saint Petersburg is less about secret addresses than about the clock. The same dish, in the same room, costs roughly half at 14:30 on a Tuesday and full price at 17:30 on a Saturday. Visitors who do not know that schedule conclude the city is expensive; it is not, it is just timed.

The pyshki counter on Bolshaya Konyushennaya

Bolshaya Konyushennaya 25 has been frying ring doughnuts since 1958, and the machine doing the frying dates from the fifties. Hours are 9:00–20:00 on weekdays and 10:00–20:00 at weekends and holidays. There are no fillings and never will be: powdered sugar and coffee with condensed milk, exactly as in Soviet times. Prices are not published online, only chalked up at the till, but two people can eat for less than one Nevsky Prospekt cappuccino. The catch is the queue, which spills onto the street at weekends. Go around 10:00 or after 15:00.

Set lunch is a time window, not a place

Vasileostrovsky Market at Bolshoy Prospekt V.O. 16 publishes its weekday lunch deals: soup with a Dagestani chudu pie and a drink for 490 ₽, an Armenian soup-and-grill combo for 450–490 ₽, miso with karaage chicken for 550 ₽, ramen and wok with a drink for 590 ₽, pasta sets for 650–690 ₽, a burger combo for 870 ₽, and 20% off the whole menu at Bao Mochi. Almost all of these run Monday to Friday, roughly noon to 15:00 or 16:00. At weekends the deals disappear and the same plates cost double. Walk the whole hall and read every lunch board — the gap between 490 ₽ and 870 ₽ is thirty metres.

Georgian arithmetic

The PhaliHinkali chain has restaurants on Bolshaya Morskaya 27, Nevsky Prospekt 32–34 and across the outer districts. Its published menu starts at 45 ₽ per khinkali dumpling, 110 ₽ for phali starters and 290 ₽ for khachapuri. The trap is portion maths: an adult wants six to eight dumplings, then orders khachapuri, which is effectively a second main course. Share one khachapuri between two people and the bill stays sane.

Coffee, markets and late food

Expensive coffee here is usually syrup and cream: the Chainikoff chain lists a double cream raf at 349 ₽ and a caramel frappé at 289 ₽, while plain americano or cappuccino costs noticeably less. For cheap food late in the evening, the Sevkabel Port food court on Kozhevennaya Liniya 40 has dozens of small kitchens; entry is free and the venue states cafés are open 10:00–23:00. Cheapest of all: buy bread, cheese and fish from the market grocery floor, open 9:00–21:00.
