Ruskeala from St Petersburg: How to Get There and What It Costs

🚇Getting Around

"Karelia is close by" is where this trip goes wrong. Ruskeala Mountain Park is 310 km from St Petersburg — four to five hours by car, five to six by bus. And reaching Sortavala is not the same as arriving: the park lies 37 km north-west of the town, and that last leg needs its own plan.

The basics

Getting there

The train is the calm option and drops you in Sortavala with one transfer left. The bus is an hour or two slower. Driving is the only way to be at the gate when it opens at 10:00 and get home before midnight; the park publishes its coordinates, 61.944603, 30.581341, and parking is free.

For the last stretch there is also the Ruskeala Express steam train, which we cover in a separate guide to its timetable and connections. Read that before you buy train tickets from the city — this is where schedules usually fail to line up. The park's site confirms only that the retro train runs daily.

Inside the park

The park covers 32 hectares with more than 15 km of paths. Marble was quarried here from 1764, by decree of Catherine the Great, until the 1940s — nearly 180 years. It faces St Isaac's Cathedral, floors Kazan Cathedral and forms the window sills of the Hermitage. The old lime works ran from 1896 to 1991, burning marble into 35 tonnes of lime a day. There is a lake named after Auguste de Montferrand, who came in person to choose stone, and a sinkhole with an underground lake some 30 m below.

Walking the surface needs only the entry ticket. Guided routes cost extra: the Marble Canyon tour is 950 ₽ for 1 hour 15 minutes and 1,600 m; Miners' Road is 1,150 ₽ for 1 hour 45 minutes and 2,600 m; Underground Ruskeala, the adits themselves, is 2,500 ₽, up to an hour, 850 m, age 7 and up. A shuttle to the Ahinkoski waterfalls is 250 ₽.

When to come

Autumn suits the place: wet dark marble, greener water, fewer people than in July. In the cold season the slopes are lit artistically after dark, which is worth staying for until closing at 20:00. Swimming is banned year-round, with fines from 2,000 ₽; open fires and barbecues carry fines from 3,000 ₽. Dogs are allowed on a lead and muzzled, but not in the cafés, the heritage centre, the boats or the underground route.

One honest warning: a day trip works by car, at the cost of eight to ten hours on the road. By train or bus, plan a night in Sortavala.
