St Petersburg Water Parks: Piterland or Rodeo Drive

St Petersburg has two large indoor water parks: Piterland on Primorsky Prospekt and Rodeo Drive on Prospekt Kultury. Choosing between them comes down to a single trade-off, and it is not about price.

Spectacle against queues. Piterland is markedly more impressive — and its queues are markedly worse.

The figure that decides it

Yandex Maps breaks reviews down by theme, and waiting time is one of them. The gap between the two parks is enormous. At Piterland the theme comes up 4,608 times and only 9 per cent of those reviews are positive. At Rodeo Drive it comes up 325 times, 44 per cent positive.

In practice that means this: at Piterland on a busy day you can spend an hour queuing to ride five slides. Rodeo Drive has queues too, but they are not what people talk about when they talk about the place.

Piterland — for the spectacle

An enormous glass dome that fills the hall with daylight, and a 25-metre pirate frigate standing in the middle of the pool. That is what people come for, and photographs from there are instantly recognisable.

It is the larger and more varied of the two: a banya and spa zone (praised noticeably more often than its rival's), a children's pool, a separate area for toddlers, cafés. There are family changing rooms — not bookable in advance, handed out at the desk subject to availability, yours for the whole visit.

Who it suits: anyone going for the scale and the picture; families with small children who need a dedicated area; banya enthusiasts.

Caveats: weekend queues are the standing complaint. And separately: the entrance is not wheelchair accessible, although the interior is.

Rodeo Drive — for actually riding

A smaller family park: several slides and an 80-metre tube, plus a children's pool with two small slides and fountains. Less of a spectacle, but active recreation is its best-rated theme by far — 84 per cent positive.

Who it suits: people who came to ride rather than queue; teenagers; anyone living in the north of the city.

Caveat: reviewers judge the pool and the interior more harshly than at Piterland.

What they share — and should know in advance

Both have the same weakness, and the reviews are blunt about it: the state of the premises. Repairs come up nearly a thousand times at each, with 3 per cent positive at Piterland and 5 per cent at Rodeo Drive. The interiors score much the same. Neither park is new, and neither will look it.

The second shared point is food. The cafés are criticised at both. Eating before or after is simpler than counting on lunch inside.

Saving money

Rodeo Drive runs two half-price windows on weekdays: early morning and one hour later in the afternoon. The mechanism is simple — enter within the window, pay half. Check the exact hours and conditions on their site, as promotions change.

The general rule for both: choosing a weekday over a weekend does more than any promotion. On a weekday morning the park is nearly empty, and that is precisely the hour you would otherwise spend in a queue.

Getting there

Piterland: 72 Primorsky Prospekt, ground floor. About a kilometre on foot from Begovaya metro.

Rodeo Drive: 1 Prospekt Kultury, first floor. The Prospekt Kultury stop is two hundred metres away, but the metro is not — Politekhnicheskaya is some three kilometres off. Without a car, allow for surface transport.

With children, wet things and a whole day behind you, the journey home is more tiring than the water park itself. Request a transfer and carriers will quote for your date.

Going for the spectacle and willing to queue: Piterland, with its frigate under the dome. Going to ride and protective of your time: Rodeo Drive. Either way, on a weekday rather than a weekend.
