A new art object has appeared on the observation deck of Lakhta Center: a light-and-sound installation called "Nidum". It's a small but noticeable addition to the already popular route for anyone visiting St. Petersburg's tallest building for the view.

What "Nidum" is

"Nidum" is a nest-shaped installation combining light and sound. The shape nods to the archetype of home and shelter — it's built as a space you can step into or linger near, not just look at from a distance.

Combining light and sound in one object works differently from a static sculpture: the impression shifts with the time of day and the light around it, so the same piece can feel quite different at noon and after dark.

Where to find it

Lakhta Center is St. Petersburg's tallest building, located in the Primorsky district on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. Its observation deck is one of the few spots in the city where you can see the historic centre, the gulf and the modern cityscape at once, from a height no historic building downtown can match.

Fitting it into your route

If you already planned to go up the Lakhta Center observation deck, "Nidum" is one more reason not to rush — give some time to the installation itself, not just the panorama. If you haven't been yet, it's an extra reason to go now, while the piece is new.

Before you go

Lakhta Center is not in the historic centre but in the Primorsky district — getting there from Nevsky Prospekt or downtown takes real time. If you're combining the observation deck with other stops in one day, build in time for the trip there and back.

The distance from downtown is part of the point: the view of classic St. Petersburg opens up precisely from a spot where you can't see St. Petersburg itself from the embankments. Treat it as a trip in its own right rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else, and the travel time stops feeling like wasted time.

To avoid losing a day planning the route yourself, you can book a tour that includes the observation deck ahead of time — especially useful on a first visit if you want to see both the panorama and the centre in one trip.
