One number decides this trip: 22:17. That is the last Lastochka train out of Vyborg to St Petersburg's Finlyandsky station, arriving at 23:29. Everything on your second day has to fit in front of it. The train before leaves at 20:44, a slow regional train at 20:53.
Vyborg is a medieval Swedish-Finnish town two hours north of St Petersburg. A day trip works, but in October it means watching the clock from lunchtime: sunset is 18:34 on 3 October and 17:11 on 31 October. One night changes the trip — an almost empty castle island in the evening, and the ticket desk at 9:00 before the coach groups arrive.
Trains both ways
- Lastochka — 1 hour 12 minutes, 353 ₽ one way, four stops.
- Regular elektrichka — 2 hours 10 minutes to 2 hours 31 minutes, 314 ₽, stops everywhere.
Lastochka departures to Vyborg: 07:55, 09:20, 11:10, 13:50, 15:11, 17:01, 18:09, 20:05, 20:47. Back from Vyborg: 17:08, 17:57, 18:20, 18:40, 18:50, 20:44 and 22:17, plus slower trains at 18:55, 19:37 and 20:53. Not every service runs daily, so check your date when buying. Bus 850 connects Vyborg bus station with Parnas metro, but it is a backup: evening departures end earlier than the last train.
Where to sleep
The town is compact — even Monrepos park is about 3 km from the railway station on foot. A hotel in the old town puts you on Krepostnaya street and sells out first for weekends; an apartment is cheaper but check-in is arranged with the owner, which matters if you arrive at 23:05; a hotel by the station suits early departures; a lodge on the bay is quiet but ties you to taxis.
Today the search shows 547 properties in Vyborg from 2 830 ₽ a night, with central hotels and apartments listed between roughly 3 230 and 9 420 ₽ for two. Fridays and Saturdays cost more than Tuesdays. If you also need a base in the city, see where to stay in St Petersburg.
The evening
Exhibitions inside the castle close at 18:00, but the Castle Island stays open until 19:30, with last entry at 19:00 and the ticket office open until 19:00. So: walk onto the island before 19:00, then cross to the Krepostnoy bridge and Yuzhny Val embankment for the view of St Olaf's tower above the water, then up Krepostnaya street to the Market Square. The Round Tower, a 1547 bastion, holds a restaurant open 12:00—23:00 — the easiest way to spend a cold evening inside a medieval building.
Morning: castle, tower, Monrepos
- Castle Island: daily 9:00—19:30, last entry 19:00, ticket 100 ₽ (200 ₽ for foreign visitors).
- St Olaf's tower: daily 9:00—19:30, last entry 19:00, ticket 500 ₽ for everyone.
- Main museum building: Wednesday to Sunday 10:00—18:00, closed Monday and Tuesday. Combined ticket 1 300 ₽.
There is no booking and no guided tour for St Olaf's tower: tickets are sold only at the desk and the terminal on the island, and numbers are limited. That is the reason to arrive at 9:00.
Monrepos, the rock-and-pine park, switched to winter hours on 1 October: open 9:00—18:00 daily, exit until 20:00. Adult ticket 500 ₽, foreign visitors over 16 pay 1 000 ₽, under-16s free; a group tour starts daily at 12:00 at the ticket office, 500 ₽ each. Bus 16 to the "CRB" stop, or walk 3 km. Park rules forbid leaving the gravel paths — wet granite is genuinely slippery.
What it costs for two
Four Lastochka tickets 1 412 ₽, Castle Island 200 ₽, St Olaf's tower 1 000 ₽, Monrepos 1 000 ₽ — 3 612 ₽ fixed. Add a night from 2 830 ₽ to about 9 000 ₽ and the trip lands between roughly 6 500 and 13 000 ₽ for two, food aside.
Book the return train first, then the room, then the programme. Skip Monday and Tuesday if you want the museum halls, and keep Monrepos for the morning: after mid-October usable daylight ends around 17:00. More ideas: autumn day trips from St Petersburg.
