Short answer: Vyborg is the easiest «trip abroad» you can take by car from Saint Petersburg without leaving Russia: 140 kilometres along the Scandinavia highway, an hour and a half to two hours — and you are in the country's only medieval town, with a Swedish castle on an island and the rocky Mon Repos park. The route needs no SUV and no preparation: an ordinary car, one overnight stay, two days of slow walking.
The road: the A-181 Scandinavia is fast and dull — which is good news
You leave the city northbound via the WHSD, then join the Scandinavia highway. The first half is wide, the second narrower, but the asphalt is good the whole way. Friday evening is jammed at the city exit — it is easier to start on Saturday at 8–9 am: by eleven you are parking by the Market Square. Petrol stations appear regularly along the route, no special planning needed.

Day one: the castle and the old town on foot
Leave the car for the day near the market or on the embankment — old Vyborg is tiny and entirely walkable. Vyborg Castle on its island is the centrepiece: a museum, courtyards, views over the bay. Then come the cobbled streets with 16th-century houses, the Clock Tower, the Market Square and the obligatory Vyborg pretzel from a local bakery. In the evening the town empties and looks properly Scandinavian — that alone is the reason to stay overnight rather than day-trip. There are few hotels in Vyborg, so book ahead for a weekend.
