Senate Square delivers three of St. Petersburg's defining images in one place: Peter the Great on a rearing horse, the gold dome of St. Isaac's Cathedral and the sweep of the Neva. It's 15 minutes' walk from Nevsky Prospekt, it's free, and it works at any time of day.

The Bronze Horseman
The statue's official name is the Bronze Horseman — a monument to Peter I commissioned by Catherine II and unveiled in 1782. The enormous granite plinth, the Thunder Stone, was transported from Lakhta on the Gulf of Finland; moving it took months and became an engineering feat documented in contemporary sources. The inscription reads "To Peter I from Catherine II" in Russian and Latin.
The square is an open public space — no tickets, no barriers, no closing time.
Best spots for photos
- Head-on from the square: horseman and St. Isaac's dome in the same frame
- From the embankment: the horse against open sky and the Neva
- Evening: artificial lighting turns on after sunset — in October, that's from about 17:30
Early morning (before 10:00) means almost no crowds and soft side light.

1.5-hour walking route
Starting from Admiralteyskaya metro:
- Walk down Malaya Morskaya Street to St. Isaac's Square (5 min)
- Pass the Manege exhibition hall façade
- St. Isaac's Cathedral (exterior or climb the colonnade)
- Walk to the Neva → Senate Square and the Bronze Horseman (5 min from St. Isaac's)
- Walk east along the embankment to the Admiralty building
Add St. Isaac's interior and you're looking at 3–3.5 hours total.
Getting there
Admiralteyskaya metro — single exit, then along Malaya Morskaya Street. About 10 minutes on foot.
From Nevsky Prospekt metro — 15 minutes through Palace Square and along the embankment. Good option if you're coming from the Hermitage.
Arriving in St. Petersburg by plane? Book a transfer from Pulkovo Airport to arrive at the centre without the hassle of luggage on public transport.
Not suitable for
The square has uneven cobblestones — not ideal for pushchairs or anyone with mobility difficulties in bad weather. St. Isaac's Cathedral directly opposite is the warm-weather alternative.
