The autumn school break gives families a week to explore St Petersburg before winter sets in. Expect rain and early darkness, but also short museum queues, children's theatre performances and parks that aren't yet buried in snow.
When and how long
Most schools break from 24 October to 1 November. Three to four days is enough for museums, a park day and one out-of-town trip.
Kid-friendly museums
Kunstkamera for the curious (ages six and up), the Zoological Museum for animal lovers, the Railway Museum for hands-on fun. The Oceanarium on Marata Street is a safe bet on a rainy day — buy tickets online during school holidays.
The Hermitage works for older children, especially with a family tour or audio guide.

Theatre and shows
Children's performances run almost daily during the break: the Puppet Theatre, TYuZ, Zazerkalye. Book popular shows a week ahead.
Parks and outdoor time
On a dry day: the Summer Garden, Mikhailovsky Garden, Yelagin Island. Peter and Paul Fortress is free to walk around and the Neva beach is worth a look even in October.
If you'd like a guided family day, you can choose an excursion.
Who should think twice
Families with toddlers under three: most museums are geared towards ages five and up. Anyone unwilling to carry a rain backup plan: indoor options are a must every day.
Good to know
Plan one main activity per day instead of several, because children tire quickly in wet weather and queues slow every transition. Book museum and theatre tickets for a specific time, and carry a spare pair of dry socks and a small bag of snacks. The metro is the fastest way between sights, and it is worth checking the fares for children before you travel. Family museums are busiest around midday, so start early or go after lunch, and eat slightly outside peak hours because cafes near big sights fill fast.
