Oranienbaum, called Lomonosov on modern maps, is the only imperial estate near St Petersburg that survived the siege: the defensive line held north of here. As a result it preserves the only genuine 18th-century interiors in the region — Catherine II's Chinese Palace stands exactly as it was.

Grand Menshikov Palace

🏛 Grand Menshikov Palace

The main building was built in the 1710s for Alexander Menshikov and remains the largest Petrine-era structure outside the city. Restored state rooms include the Japanese Pavilion and the Lower Terrace. Visits run in guided groups.

🎨 Catherine II's Chinese Palace

The highlight is the Chinese Palace, designed by Antonio Rinaldi for Catherine II as a private retreat. Sixteen rooms, original paintings, bugle-bead wall panels, parquet in eight types of wood. Photography is prohibited due to the fragility of the finishes. Open warm season only, usually through October.

⛷ Sliding Hill Pavilion

The Sliding Hill Pavilion is a three-tiered baroque pavilion, once the top of a 500-metre wooden slide used for summer carts. The slide was dismantled in the 19th century; the pavilion survived with its Round Hall and Porcelain Study.

🌳 Upper Park

A 162-hectare landscape park. Main features: Peter's Park, Lower Pond, Ruin Pavilion and Ruin Bridge. Autumn offers the best colours and few visitors.

🚕 Getting there

Suburban train from the Baltic Station to Oranienbaum — 50 minutes, 130 ₽. Minibus 300 from Avtovo. By car — Ring Road and Peterhof Highway, an hour. From central St Petersburg a RideClu transfer makes sense if you combine it with Peterhof.

🛏 Where to stay

For a two-day suburban loop, lodging in Stary Peterhof or Lomonosov is more convenient than returning to town. Apartments are bookable on Tutkakdoma.

If this is your first time in St Petersburg, bear two things in mind. Distances between the main sights are short, but autumn daylight is brief and rain arrives on no schedule. Plan your route around the lit half of the day, allow half an hour of buffer between stops, and bring a thermos and gloves for the evening. For palaces and museums keep a passport on you — some ticket desks ask for ID, especially at timed exhibitions.

On the ground, walking is easiest between adjacent blocks, with short taxi hops when it gets dark or wet. If you are travelling as a group or with children, arrange the evening transfer back to your flat ahead of time — late-night fares spike. Flats in the centre go fast at weekends: book a week ahead for Nevsky, the Petrograd Side or Vasilievsky.

St Petersburg rewards half-day visits rather than one long marathon. Pick a theme — a single museum, a district, a walk — and give it time. After the active part, a warm cafe, a bookshop or a swimming pool is as much part of the ritual as the sights themselves, especially in November.
