Food delivery in St Petersburg: locked courtyards, hotel rules and refunds

Ordering food to a rented flat in St Petersburg is easy right up to the moment the courier calls and says he is standing at a locked gate. Historic buildings in the centre are built around enclosed courtyards, the archway from the street is closed with wrought-iron gates, and the access system is decided by the residents' association — sometimes changing overnight. Here is how delivery actually works for a visitor, based on what the services and hotels publish in their own rules.

What the address field has to contain

Yandex Eda's terms of use list what the customer is obliged to enter: the full delivery address including street, building number with any wing or block, plus entrance number, flat number, floor and intercom code, along with the recipient's name and phone. This is a contractual condition, not a suggestion. Leave the intercom code out and the courier will do his part by reaching the street door and calling you.

Add a physical instruction in the courier comment rather than "please call": something like "archway from the street, second staircase on the left inside the courtyard". Ask your host for the staircase number at check-in — in St Petersburg they are numbered by walking around the courtyard, not sequentially from the street.

Why the courier stops at the gate

The rules cover this case directly. If an order is delivered to an address with a controlled-access regime that limits entry of people or vehicles, delivery is performed up to the first checkpoint. A locked courtyard gate is exactly that boundary. Practical conclusion: if there is a gate, walk out to the archway instead of waiting for a doorbell.

Leave-at-door versus hand-to-hand

With the leave-at-door option, the restaurant or courier is considered to have fulfilled its obligation at the moment the delivery notification is sent, without handing the order to anyone, and bears no responsibility for the order afterwards. In an unfamiliar building or a hotel corridor that is a genuine risk. Standard delivery requires you to be present at the address.

Two deadlines that cost money

Arrival times shown in the app are approximate, and waiting up to 15 minutes beyond the stated time is not considered a breach. The other deadline is harsher: if you do not come out, after 10 minutes of the courier waiting you are treated as having withdrawn from the contract, and the money paid for both the food and the delivery is not refunded.

Hotels and hostels differ completely

There is no common rule. The Oktyabrskaya Hotel publishes, inside its house rules, a separate order titled "prohibition on admitting couriers and on accepting parcels" — so no courier gets in and no package is accepted at the desk. Non-registered visitors may stay in a guest's room only until 22:00. The Friends hotel and hostel chain is the opposite: doors open 24 hours, outside visitors allowed in private rooms from 09:00 to 23:00, but food and drink are banned in shared dormitory rooms, so a delivery has to be eaten in a common area. Many hotels publish nothing at all — ask at reception on arrival.

Zones, minimum orders and what to do when it goes wrong

Delivery zones are set by the restaurant or shop, not by the app, and the service warns that some functions may be unavailable depending on region and delivery address. Minimum order values are shown as "order from XX roubles" and must exclude the delivery fee. Checking two or three apps for the same address is worthwhile — coverage differs sharply between districts.

If something arrives spoiled or wrong, you must contact support immediately with photos or video and a description; complaints are not accepted more than two days after delivery, after which you deal with the restaurant directly. If nothing arrives because the restaurant never accepted the order or no courier was available, the order counts as cancelled with a refund. Disputed card charges can be raised within 14 days, and the service has up to 30 calendar days to decide. For groceries, VkusVill states that standard delivery is free and takes about an hour, express delivery starts from 15 minutes for 149 roubles with money back if late, and the service runs around the clock.
