The Tikhaya River is a small waterway in the Vyborg district of Leningrad Oblast, known for its granite rapids and undeveloped shores. There are no cafés, no rescue services and no paved paths — just rocks, water and forest.
Getting there by car
From St Petersburg, take the Scandinavia highway (E18) toward Vyborg, then head for Vysotsk. About 2.5–3 hours without traffic. The last stretch is a dirt road that can be tricky after rain — a 4WD is safer.
If you need a car, you can rent one in St Petersburg.

Getting there without a car
Commuter train from Finlyandsky Station to Vyborg (about 2 hours), then a bus or taxi toward Vysotsk. Allow a full day for the round trip.
Camping
No official campsites. People pitch tents on flat granite patches or forest clearings along the banks. Bring your own firewood supplies and carry out all rubbish.
Kayaking and safety
Rapids are low-grade but the water is cold year-round. A wetsuit or drysuit is essential from September. No rescue services, patchy mobile coverage. Always paddle in a group with life vests and dry bags.
Nearby
Vyborg: the medieval castle, Monrepos park, the Old Town. Vysotsk: lighthouse and Gulf views.
Who should skip it
Anyone who wants facilities — there are none. Families with small children: slippery banks, cold water, no help nearby.
Good to know
Download an offline map of the area before you leave the highway, because mobile coverage is patchy and the last stretch is poorly signposted. Fill the tank in Vyborg, tell someone your route and expected return time, and head back before dark, since autumn light fades by late afternoon. Wear waterproof boots and bring a thermos, a headlamp, a first aid kit and spare dry clothes. Take all rubbish with you, and avoid lighting fires in dry or windy conditions.
