Mariinsky Theatre for the autumn school holidays: a family playbill to pick together

The Mariinsky's autumn-holiday playbill is dense: ballet matinees for ages six and up, three evening operas, two symphony concerts in the Concert Hall. Before you buy the ticket, the first decision is not what but where — the Mariinsky operates four stages in St Petersburg, and the ticket is tied to the building on it.

🎭 Four stages, four addresses

- Mariinsky (historic building) — Teatralnaya Ploshchad 1, the green-and-white 1860 house. Classical ballet, grand opera. Short walk from Sadovaya metro. - Mariinsky II (New Stage) — Dekabristov 34, the modern building across the Kryukov Canal. Also classical, but with more flexible staging. Fifteen minutes on foot from the metro. - Concert Hall — Pisareva 20, a converted scenery workshop. Symphony concerts, chamber music. - Primorskaya Stage — far on the Petrogradsky Side; children's matinees sometimes play there, check the ticket.

The playbill mixes all four. The address on the ticket is final — there is no shuttle between them, and the ushers will send you back if you turn up at the wrong building.

👧 What to see with a child aged seven to twelve

The safest openings are: - Cinderella (Prokofiev) — a classical ballet in two acts, under two hours. Melodic, big orchestra, long magical scene. - The Nutcracker — the Mariinsky's signature production is on tour by late October, but the holiday-week replacement is Vainonen's version with children on stage. - Masquerade (symphonic suite) in the Concert Hall — forty minutes, no interval, cheap tickets.

Full-evening operas (Carmen, Boris Godunov) are too long for most children under twelve. Ballet matinees at 12:00 and 15:00 are the practical choice; shows that start at 19:00 end at 22:00 — late for a school-age child, and the metro is closing.

🚕 How to leave after a late show

Evening shows at the Mariinsky run until 21:30–22:00; the last metro train leaves around 00:00, but the queue at Sadovaya right after the show is long. For a family evening it is simpler to book a transfer in Saint Petersburg via RideClu with pick-up at the main entrance.

🏨 Where to stay with children

For a two-day Mariinsky trip the practical radius is Kolomna and Teatralnaya Ploshchad — within walking distance of both the historic building and Mariinsky II, with grocery shops and a quiet evening pace. Short-term flats in Saint Petersburg on Tutkakdoma usually have options with a separate bedroom for the parents and a sofa bed for a child.

If a river walk is still part of the plan, in late October short cruises on the Neva still run during daylight hours — a thirty-minute trip past the Hermitage and back is enough for a six-year-old. Short river cruises on the Neva — GetBoat are the easiest way to add water to a Mariinsky weekend.
