Almost everyone who has visited St. Petersburg has seen Kazan Cathedral on Nevsky Prospekt — far fewer have seen how its architect actually envisioned it. The Russian Museum is showing watercolours and drawings by Andrei Voronikhin, a rare chance to see the cathedral's design through the eyes of the person who created it.

Who Voronikhin was

Andrei Voronikhin designed Kazan Cathedral, one of the most recognisable landmarks on Nevsky Prospekt. His graphic legacy — watercolours, sketches, working drawings — is shown far less often than the buildings themselves, since this kind of material usually stays in museum storage and comes out only on special occasions.

For an architect of this scale, drawing was not a side activity but part of the job itself: before a building appears in stone, it goes through dozens of sketches and revisions on paper. Seeing those intermediate steps is a rare chance to understand how a decision that now looks obvious and inevitable actually came to be.

What's on display

The exhibition features watercolours and drawings by Voronikhin from the Russian Museum's collection — original graphic work by the architect, not copies or reconstructions, showing how the design looked on paper before it became the cathedral on Nevsky.

Why this is rare

Architectural archives from the 18th and 19th centuries are not shown often: paper is far more fragile than painting or sculpture, and such pieces are usually protected from long exposure to light. If you care about Petersburg's architecture as more than a backdrop for photos, this is the kind of show worth prioritising.

By comparison, Kazan Cathedral itself is accessible any day — it stands on Nevsky and isn't going anywhere. Voronikhin's drawings, on the other hand, are shown rarely and briefly: if you happen to be in the city right now, this isn't the kind of opportunity you can simply postpone to your next trip.

Combining it with a city walk

The Russian Museum sits in the historic centre, within walking distance of Nevsky Prospekt and Kazan Cathedral itself. A logical route: see Voronikhin's drawings at the museum first, then walk to the cathedral to see how the design looks two centuries later.

If you'd rather see the whole route with context on the city and its architects, you can book a guided tour in advance.
