Tonight at 6:30 PM, the Benois Wing of the Russian Museum (2 Griboyedov Canal Embankment) hosts a lecture titled "The Forest Symphony of Ivan Shishkin." The speaker is Sergei Krivondenченков, Doctor of Art History at the Russian Museum. According to the museum's official channel, tickets are still available.
Format: Inside the Exhibition
The lecture happens in the actual exhibition galleries — you stand among the original paintings while the speaker works through them. It's closer to a guided deep-dive than a standard museum tour, running approximately 90 minutes.
Shishkin is the most recognisable Russian landscape painter of the 19th century. Most visitors know his paintings from reproductions; hearing an expert unpack them in front of the originals is a different experience.
Getting There Tonight
The Benois Wing is on Griboyedov Canal Embankment, 2. Nearest metro stations: Nevsky Prospekt (7 minutes) and Gostiny Dvor (8 minutes). Given evening traffic, the metro is faster than a cab.
The museum box office closes at 5 PM — buy online to avoid issues.
Where to Stay Nearby
The Russian Museum sits between Nevsky Prospekt and the Mikhailovsky Garden. Central accommodation puts you within walking distance of the Benois Wing and most of the city's evening programme.
The lecture ends around 8 PM — enough time for dinner in the centre afterwards.
The lecture series at the Russian Museum runs throughout the autumn season. Tickets are available at the museum box office or online at rusmuseum.ru. The Benois Wing entrance is located on the canal side of the building, separate from the main entrance on Arts Square. Visitors are advised to arrive 10 minutes early for registration. Shishkin is best known for his precise, monumental depictions of the Russian forest — standing in front of the originals is a different experience from any reproduction. This lecture makes that difference explicit.
