St Isaac's is the fourth-largest Christian cathedral in the world and the central vertical of St Petersburg's skyline. Auguste de Montferrand built it over 40 years, 1818–1858.
⛪ Inside
Three main stops: the dome space with mosaics, the Foucault pendulum (hung 1931–1986; dismantled, but the floor pin remains), and the iconostasis by Fyodor Solntsev with malachite columns. The walls are faced in 43 varieties of stone.
🪜 Colonnade: 262 steps
The main reason to come is the external colonnade on the upper drum. 262 steps up a narrow spiral; the view is 360° across the historic centre. Open May through October — exact closing dates on cathedral.ru.
💳 Tickets
Two separate tickets: cathedral around 400 ₽, colonnade around 300 ₽. Online at cathedral.ru or at the box office on St Isaac's Square. Weekend queues reach an hour; weekdays are better.
🚕 Getting there
Admiralteyskaya metro, five minutes on foot. Plan 2–2.5 hours for both cathedral and colonnade. On exit, a RideClu transfer, especially if continuing to the theatre.
🛏 Where to stay
Apartments on Galernaya, Millionnaya and near Kazanskaya — walking distance. Bookable on Tutkakdoma.
If this is your first time in St Petersburg, bear two things in mind. Distances between the main sights are short, but autumn daylight is brief and rain arrives on no schedule. Plan your route around the lit half of the day, allow half an hour of buffer between stops, and bring a thermos and gloves for the evening. Carry a thermos of tea, an offline map and a charger; mobile internet in the centre is steady but can drop along the embankments.
On the ground, walking is easiest between adjacent blocks, with short taxi hops when it gets dark or wet. If you are travelling as a group or with children, arrange the evening transfer back to your flat ahead of time — late-night fares spike. Flats in the centre go fast at weekends: book a week ahead for Nevsky, the Petrograd Side or Vasilievsky.
St Petersburg rewards half-day visits rather than one long marathon. Pick a theme — a single museum, a district, a walk — and give it time. After the active part, a warm cafe, a bookshop or a swimming pool is as much part of the ritual as the sights themselves, especially in November.
