Pavlovsk was the favourite residence of the dowager empress Maria Fyodorovna and, by consensus, the most pleasant imperial estate near St Petersburg. The 600-hectare park is the largest landscape park in Europe; the palace by Charles Cameron and Vincenzo Brenna preserves more original interiors than either Pushkin or Peterhof — the German advance never fully burned it because most furniture had been evacuated.

🏛 Palace: Greek Hall, Italian Hall, Maria Fyodorovna's study

The second-floor state suite runs in a loop. The Italian Hall is a rotunda with a dome painting after the Pantheon. The Greek Hall uses faux-marble columns, conceived by Maria Fyodorovna as a classical reception space. The Crimson Study and Pilaster Study were her private rooms. The ground floor holds Paul I's family apartments and the children's quarters.

🌳 Park: Red Valleys, White Birch, Temple of Friendship

The park is divided into districts: Old Sylvia with its Apollo Belvedere, New Sylvia, the Pond Valley with Cameron's Temple of Friendship and the White Birch — the most open section. Covering it all in one visit is hard; pick one or two districts. Autumn colour peaks in late September and early October; in November the park turns graphic and almost empty.

🎻 Concerts at the Pavlovsk Vauxhall

In the 19th century Pavlovsk hosted Russia's first concert hall — the Pavlovsk Vauxhall, where Johann Strauss performed. The building did not survive, but concerts continue in the palace Rose Pavilion and Round Hall. Programme on pavlovskmuseum.ru.

🚕 Getting there

Suburban train from Vitebsk Station to Pavlovsk — 40 minutes, 110 ₽. Minibuses from Kupchino metro. Easily combined with Pushkin, 15 minutes by train or taxi. From central St Petersburg, a RideClu transfer makes a two-park day feasible.

🛏 Where to stay

Pushkin has more lodging but a few small hotels operate in Pavlovsk itself — quieter. Apartments and inns are bookable on Tutkakdoma.
