Rooftop St Petersburg is a city-tourism genre of its own. Doing it independently is a criminal offence after fatal incidents in the early 2010s. Licensed operators run roof tours with briefing, gear and insurance.

🏢 1. My Petersburg roof tours

Several central rooftops with a professional guide. Groups up to 10, 1.5–2 hours. From 1,500 ₽.

🏢 2. "St Petersburg Roofs" — professional operator

Helmets, harnesses, a 15-minute briefing, roof with a drawn-bridge view. From 2,500 ₽.

🏢 3. "Roof of 7 Malaya Sadovaya"

One of the most popular rooftops — a lift takes you to a landing, then up. Paid entry, bar on top.

🏢 4. Loft Project Etazhi rooftop

A legal open terrace on the fifth floor of a former bread factory. Enter via the museum ticket, 300 ₽.

🏢 5. St Isaac's and Kazan colonnades (alternative)

The classic legal "rooftops" — the colonnades of St Isaac's and Kazan. Safe, ticketed (season through October).

🚕 Planning

For the drawbridge view the roof must face the Neva — book a week ahead. From the centre everything is walking; the operator supplies gear. For a late return, RideClu.

🛏 Where to stay

Apartments in the centre with a roof view are bookable on Tutkakdoma.

If this is your first time in St Petersburg, bear two things in mind. Distances between the main sights are short, but autumn daylight is brief and rain arrives on no schedule. Plan your route around the lit half of the day, allow half an hour of buffer between stops, and bring a thermos and gloves for the evening. Dress in layers and wear non-slip soles — the embankments and bridges are windy, and courtyards stay wet after rain.

On the ground, walking is easiest between adjacent blocks, with short taxi hops when it gets dark or wet. If you are travelling as a group or with children, arrange the evening transfer back to your flat ahead of time — late-night fares spike. Flats in the centre go fast at weekends: book a week ahead for Nevsky, the Petrograd Side or Vasilievsky.

St Petersburg rewards half-day visits rather than one long marathon. Pick a theme — a single museum, a district, a walk — and give it time. After the active part, a warm cafe, a bookshop or a swimming pool is as much part of the ritual as the sights themselves, especially in November.
