In Saint Petersburg you can sit at a potter's wheel, sew on a professional machine or shoot in a lit studio for free — if you are between 14 and 35. This is not a promotion: the city funds a network of youth centres that charge nothing and ask only that you book ahead. Here is how it works, using the "Sozdanie" space on Prospekt Nauki that is all over local social media right now, plus where else to go, including the Petrograd Side and the south of the city.
What "Sozdanie" is
"Sozdanie" (the word means "creation") is a youth space run by the Kalininsky District Youth Centre, a municipal institution. The address is Prospekt Nauki 38, building A. Inside are four workshops: ceramics, decor, sewing, and a photo and video studio. It runs in three formats — multi-week courses, one-off masterclasses and a co-working mode where you come in to work on your own project using the equipment. Everything is free for people aged 14 to 35 and strictly by prior booking; the centre repeats both conditions twice on its page.
The nearest metro is Akademicheskaya, about a kilometre and a half away along Prospekt Nauki — a twenty-minute walk or a couple of stops on a bus or tram running down the avenue.
How to book, and why it is "full"
Bookings go through the space's VK group and the centre's phone line; the seasonal timetable is posted as a file on its page (the summer one ran from 3 August, look for the autumn one in the same place). Comments under viral videos about the space say the same thing: "couldn't get into a single event in August". One space serves a whole district, the equipment is limited and a free potter's wheel is popular. The practical answer is to follow the group and book the day registration opens, not the day before a class. If it is full, there are alternatives below.
Who is eligible
The 14-to-35 bracket is not a house rule but the federal definition of "youth" in the Russian law on youth policy of 30 December 2020 (No. 489-FZ). That is why every city space quotes the same ages and why a 36-year-old will be turned away: the institutions provide services "exclusively for young people", as the PROSTO network puts it. Residence registration is normally not required, but you will need to prove your age: PROSTO asks for a passport or a verified Gosuslugi account on the first visit; district centres set their own rules, so ask when you book. Classes are in Russian, and there is no expat-specific programme — but if you live or study here and fit the age bracket, you are welcome.
Where else it is free
Petrograd Side. The Petrogradsky District Youth Centre runs the "Public Workshops" space (Bolshaya Monetnaya Street 24A) — carpentry, sewing and ceramics workshops under one roof, free for ages 14 to 35; its "Ceramic Art" studio runs from Monday well into the evening. South: Moskovsky District. Two branches of the PROSTO network sit by Moskovskaya metro (Novoizmaylovsky Prospekt 48) and Elektrosila metro (Moskovsky Prospekt 151A). These are free co-working spaces with events and talks rather than equipped workshops, but they have desks, meeting rooms and event registration on the network's website.
South-west: Kirovsky District. The Kirovsky Youth Centre unites some fifteen clubs on Prospekt Stachek, Leninsky Prospekt, Prospekt Veteranov and nearby streets, with free sections and studios for ages 14 to 35. Other PROSTO branches: Ploshchad Muzhestva (Prospekt Nepokoryonnykh 16k1D), Gorny Institut (Bolshoy Prospekt V.O. 83), Petrogradskaya (Karpovka Embankment 5AK), Sadovaya (Griboyedov Canal Embankment 105) and Kolpino (Zavodskoy Prospekt 10). The network promises a branch in every district.
What to bring
A document with your date of birth — passport or a verified Gosuslugi account — or you may not be admitted to the first class. For ceramics and decor, clothes you do not mind ruining. For the sewing workshop, your own fabric and pattern if you want to leave with a finished garment. For the photo studio, a memory card and a model if you shoot portraits: the light and backdrop are provided, the subject is not. And patience: registration opens in advance and fills fast.
