The Alexander-Svirsky Monastery (Aleksandro-Svirsky Monastyr) is one of the great Orthodox shrines of north-west Russia: it keeps the relics of St Alexander of Svir, and around 1800 it was known as the "Northern Lavra". But it lies 260 km from St Petersburg, and that is the real question for anyone planning a visit in late October: you can get there without a car, but fitting it into a single day is another matter.

On 19 October 2026 we checked the monastery's own website, the website of the Tikhvin diocese and the timetable of the North-Western Suburban Passenger Company (SZPPK, the local train operator): gate hours, services in the last days of October, the route from Lodeynoye Pole station, where you can stay overnight and the rules for pilgrims and tourists.

⛪ The Transfiguration part: a 1644 cathedral and the Trinity chapel

Even in its founder's lifetime the monastery grew out of two settlements: the Trinity complex by the monks' cells and the Transfiguration complex by the monastery cemetery. Today they form a single architectural monument of the 16th–19th centuries. Most pilgrims start with the Transfiguration part (Preobrazhenskaya chast): here stand the stone Transfiguration Cathedral of 1644, with a side chapel dedicated to St Alexander of Svir, and the Church of the Prophet Zachary and Elizabeth of 1685. On the cathedral's facade, in the arches above the entrance, there are painted murals.

Also in the Transfiguration part is the stone Holy Trinity Chapel, built on the spot where, according to tradition, the Holy Trinity appeared to St Alexander. The monastery counts it among its main holy places.

According to the monastery, the church with the relics of St Alexander can be visited at any time while the gates are open. The relics came back on 30 July 1998, which the monastery calls the biggest event of its modern history: in 1918 they were taken away and the monks dispersed, and restoration began only in 1997.

🕯 The Trinity part: the 1533 Church of the Intercession and the cathedral murals

The other half of the monastery is the Trinity part (Troitskaya chast), where the founder himself prayed. Its oldest building is the stone Church of the Intercession of the Mother of God, with a refectory and a bell gable in the Novgorod style. St Alexander built it himself in 1533 with money donated by Grand Prince Vasily III.

The main church here is the stone Trinity Cathedral of 1791. A wooden church built by the founder and consecrated in 1509 used to stand on this spot. Inside, look up: the dome and walls are covered in murals.

Nearby is the Water-Blessing Chapel over a well which, according to the monastery, St Alexander dug for the brethren himself; the present chapel was built in 1790 with money donated by Catherine II. The monastery itself recommends an hour to an hour and a half for both parts: less than 40 minutes means rushing.

🌊 Lake Roshchinskoye: the view from the water

The monastery stands on the high bank of Lake Roshchinskoye, six kilometres from the Svir river. The best view of both complexes at once is from the far side of the lake, where the white walls and green domes are reflected in the water.

🚆 Getting there without a car

The monastery's website suggests two options: a train to Lodeynoye Pole station, or the St Petersburg — Staraya Sloboda bus. From Lodeynoye Pole it is 21 km to the monastery. Local bus 89/91 "Lodeynoye Pole — Svirskoye" leaves the station square daily at 7:00, 13:20 and 18:00; otherwise take a taxi.

The conclusion is simple: by public transport a same-day return is far too tight, especially in October, when it gets dark around half past five. Without a car, plan to stay the night.

🛏 Staying in the Brethren's Building, and pilgrimage tours

After restoration, the Brethren's Building in the Trinity part now takes in pilgrims: 15 rooms (kelyi) for one, two or three people, up to 36 guests in all, each with its own facilities. Check-in is from 15:00 with a passport, check-out by 12:00, and silence is kept from 21:00 to 8:00. Rooms can only be booked through the Russian messenger app Max, using the number on the monastery's website; individual pilgrims may book no earlier than a month ahead. Without a booking you can check in from 14:00 if rooms are free. There is a tea corner in the building, and meals are served in the monastery refectory.

If you would rather not organise the journey yourself, there are group trips. The Tikhvin diocese's pilgrimage service, "Under the Protection of the Tikhvin Mother of God", offers tours of the holy places of the Svir region, while tours of the monastery itself are led only by the monastery's own pilgrimage service — groups must apply at least a week in advance. Meals can be ordered only for groups of 20 or more.

🚗 By car

According to the monastery it is 260 km from St Petersburg; the website links to a Yandex Navigator route right to the car park. By car a day trip is realistic: leave early to catch the morning service or at least arrive by midday, and expect to drive home late. In late October the last hours of the journey will be in the dark.

🧭 Good to know

📌 In short

✅ The Alexander-Svirsky Monastery is in the village of Staraya Sloboda in the Lodeynoye Pole district, 260 km from St Petersburg and 21 km from Lodeynoye Pole.

✅ The gates are open 6:00–20:00 on weekdays and 8:00–20:00 at weekends and on holidays. Entry is free and the church with the relics is open all day.

✅ Without a car: train to Lodeynoye Pole, then bus 89/91 at 7:00, 13:20 or 18:00, or a taxi. Check train times on the RZD website.

✅ A single day works only by car or with an organised group. Without a car, stay overnight in the Brethren's Building, booked through Max.

✅ See both parts: the Transfiguration part with its 1644 cathedral and Trinity chapel, and the Trinity part with the 1533 Church of the Intercession — the monastery suggests allowing an hour to an hour and a half.

The Svir monastery is not a museum or a half-day sight: it is a living monastery that people visit for the relics and the services, and it reveals itself best to those who stay into the evening and watch the windows go dark over Lake Roshchinskoye. Checked on 19 October 2026 against the websites of the Holy Trinity Alexander-Svirsky Monastery and the Tikhvin diocese and the timetable of the North-Western Suburban Passenger Company.
