Early October in St Petersburg still feels like autumn: golden parks, mild afternoons, daylight until six or seven. By the end of the month the trees are bare, darkness falls by five and rain becomes the norm. Both halves of the month are worth visiting — you just need to pack differently.

Weather week by week

The first two weeks average +8–12 °C during the day. Parks in Pushkin and Pavlovsk are at peak colour. The second half drops to +3–7 °C with frequent drizzle and Gulf wind.

Accommodation

October is shoulder season — cheaper than summer, pricier than winter. Weekdays at the end of the month are the best value. If your dates overlap with school holidays (late October), book a couple of weeks ahead.

To compare options, you can browse stays in St Petersburg.

Day 1: City centre

St Isaac's Cathedral (climb the colonnade if it's dry), Palace Square, the Hermitage or the Russian Museum. Evening walk along Nevsky Prospekt.

Day 2: Day trip to the suburbs

First half of October — Pushkin for golden Catherine Park, or Pavlovsk for a vast free park. Peterhof's grounds are open, but the fountains may already be off.

Day 3: Museums and theatre

Kunstkamera, Fabergé Museum, Peter and Paul Fortress — pick one or two. Evening at the Mariinsky or Alexandrinsky: October tickets are cheaper than December.

What's closed

Peterhof fountains from mid-month. Most river-boat tours end by late October. Rooftop walks may be cancelled in wind and rain.

Good to know

Pack for changeable weather: a waterproof jacket, an umbrella that survives wind, and shoes with good grip for wet cobblestones and fallen leaves. Sunset moves from roughly half past six at the start of the month to around five o'clock at the end, so schedule parks and suburbs for the daytime and museums for the late afternoon. Weekday mornings are the quietest time at the major museums. For day trips, check suburban train times from Vitebsky Station in advance and note the last return service.
