If you've binged every costume drama out there and dream of stepping into one for a day, you don't need to fly to England. Just outside St. Petersburg are three palace-and-park ensembles where white columns, enfilades of state rooms and manicured park alleys create a strikingly similar mood. These aren't filming locations for any specific movie — just architecture and atmosphere from the same era and the same aesthetic language that period films love to show.

🏛️ Pavlovsk: a dome on 64 columns

Pavlovsk Palace was built by architect Charles Cameron in the late 18th century — the kind of neoclassicism, with its porticos and symmetry, that many people associate with manor-house cinema. The palace's signature feature is a dome resting on 64 columns, with semicircular galleries linking the wings into a horseshoe-shaped courtyard. Inside are collections of Sèvres porcelain, tapestries, antique sculpture and silk-upholstered furniture. Around it spreads one of the largest landscape parks in Europe — alleys, pavilions, bridges over the Slavyanka River — a perfect route for a slow stroll in the style of "stepping out for air before the ball."

👑 Tsarskoye Selo: breathtaking baroque

The Catherine Palace in Pushkin is an 18th-century architectural landmark in the baroque style, part of the Tsarskoye Selo state museum-reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Gilded facades, an enfilade of state rooms and, of course, the Amber Room — the palace alone gives you the feeling of stepping into the most lavish scene of any costume drama, no need for the exact historical accuracy of any single episode.

🏰 Gatchina: a fortress-palace with a split personality

Gatchina Palace, built by architect Antonio Rinaldi for Grigory Orlov in 1781, blends the features of an English hunting lodge and a Russian country estate — and under Paul I it gained underground passages and hidden mechanisms, as if pulled straight from a gothic novel. Inside, an enfilade of state rooms awaits: the Greek and Chesme galleries, the Marble Dining Room. The mood here is darker and more mysterious than at Pavlovsk or Tsarskoye Selo — a great pick if you're drawn less to ballroom romance and more to a gothic plot full of secrets.

📌 In short

✅ This is a guide to atmosphere and architecture, not a list of filming locations for specific movies — treat any claim that something was filmed here as something to verify separately.

✅ Pavlovsk Palace: Charles Cameron's neoclassicism, a dome on 64 columns, one of Europe's largest landscape parks around it.

✅ The Catherine Palace at Tsarskoye Selo: baroque, gilded facades, the Amber Room, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

✅ Gatchina Palace: a fortress-palace with underground passages, a darker and more gothic atmosphere.

✅ All three are in St. Petersburg's suburbs, reachable in a day trip by train or bus from the city.

If it's the costume-drama mood you're after, plan the day at a leisurely pace: one palace in the morning, a park stroll in the afternoon, and you'll head back to the city feeling like you spent a few hours in a different era entirely. Check current hours and tickets on the museum-reserves' official websites, since schedules shift with the season.
