Your Lastochka to Vyborg Is Cancelled: How to Get There Today and Get a Refund

The departure board at Finlyandsky station says "cancelled" next to your Lastochka train to Vyborg, or the train was withdrawn after you had bought a reserved seat. For a day trip that hurts twice: the day is planned, and the castle and Monrepos park will not wait. Here is how to still get there today, what the railway refunds for the ticket, and why the rules for a suburban train differ from long-distance ones.

First, work out what happened

Two kinds of trains run from Saint Petersburg to Vyborg, both operated by the North-Western Suburban Passenger Company (SZPPK): fast Lastochka services, including an express with reserved seats (trains 7601 and 7604, seats sold in cars 1 to 8), and ordinary suburban electric trains from Finlyandsky station with no seat allocation. Usually a single service is cancelled, not the whole line, so the first question at the ticket office or in the RZD Passengers app is whether the next Lastochka is running and when the next ordinary train leaves. The second question is whether traffic on the line is interrupted: then several trains in a row are withdrawn and waiting is pointless.

How to get there today

If the train is cancelled when you are already in Vyborg and heading home, the same options apply in reverse, with one caveat: the last train to Saint Petersburg leaves in the evening, and after it only the bus and taxis remain. Check the time of the last train in the app before dinner, not after.

What you get back for the ticket

The Lastochka to Vyborg is a suburban train, and the rules for it are set out separately in the Russian rail passenger rules (Ministry of Transport order 352) and in the SZPPK rules.

A ticket bought in the app or by card is refunded the same way you paid; such refunds are not paid in cash at the office. A lost suburban ticket is not reissued and not refunded, so keep the receipt or e-ticket until the end of the trip.

How a suburban ticket differs from a long-distance one

On a long-distance train you would have the rights in article 83 of the Charter: a refund for the distance not travelled if traffic is interrupted, the option to transfer your ticket to another train within twelve hours of missing yours, and the delay penalty. A suburban ticket is simpler and cheaper but less protected: no delay penalty and no ticket transfer. Its strength is elsewhere: tickets for an ordinary train are sold until the last minute, and an interruption of traffic gives you a full refund with no questions asked.

If the trip cannot be saved

Sometimes it is wiser not to chase Vyborg the same day. The castle, Monrepos and the old town deserve a full day of light, not three hours after a chain of changes; our Vyborg day-trip plan assumes a morning departure. Move the trip to the next day and give today to the city.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ticket for a cancelled Lastochka to Vyborg refunded?

Yes. During an unplanned interruption of suburban traffic lasting more than one hour, the full price of a single-journey ticket is refunded at the ticket office of the departure station.

Is there compensation for a late suburban Lastochka?

No. The three per cent per hour penalty under article 110 of the Railway Transport Charter does not apply to suburban services.

Can I board the next train with a ticket for the cancelled Lastochka?

A reserved-seat ticket is valid only for its own train. You need a new ticket for the next train and a refund for the cancelled one.

How do I get to Vyborg if the trains are not running?

By intercity bus from Parnas or Devyatkino metro stations, by taxi or transfer (about 130 km along the Scandinavia highway), or by hire car.

Refund rules per the Rules for the Carriage of Passengers, Baggage and Cargo-Baggage by Rail (Ministry of Transport order 352 of 5 September 2022, paragraphs 158 to 165) and the SZPPK passenger rules; the delay penalty per article 110 and long-distance passenger rights per article 83 of the Railway Transport Charter of the Russian Federation; express train numbers per the SZPPK website. Timetables and fares change, check the RZD Passengers app before you go. Checked 8 September 2026.
