Where to Warm Up in St Petersburg: Indoor Stops for 20–40 Minutes

It is +3°C, the wind comes off the gulf and the rain falls sideways. An umbrella is useless. The problem is not what to do all day indoors — it is how to survive the twenty minutes between stops on your walk. St Petersburg has plenty of places where you can step in, dry off, sit down and leave again, and most are free or cost the price of a cup of tea.

What counts as a warm stop

A usable warm stop has four features: you walk in without a ticket, there is somewhere to sit, nobody hurries you out, and there is a toilet nearby. Shopping galleries and food halls tick all four. Bookshops and libraries tick three — the toilet is a lottery, so ask at the desk.

Nevsky Prospekt: six doors within ten minutes

Libraries are the cheapest warm room in town

City libraries are free to enter, and reading rooms have desks. A reader's card is only needed to borrow books.

Near Moskovsky Station

Galeria mall, Ligovsky 30A — shops daily 10:00–23:00, food court from 8:00. Five floors, toilets, unlimited sitting. Moskovsky railway station never closes and its ground-floor waiting hall is free, though station information states entry is on presentation of a ticket. Which terminal serves which train is in our railway station guide.

Vasilyevsky, Petrogradskaya, Sennaya

Where you will not be let in

Hotel lobbies have security and turn away non-guests. The Hermitage and St Isaac's have nothing warm before the ticket desk — just a security frame and a queue. Courtyards and stairwells are private, with keypad locks. Business centres need a pass. Metro vestibules have nowhere to sit.

Building the route

Map the warm stops first, then the sights — not the other way round. One district per day, no more than 1.5 km between indoor stops, and one long midday stop — a food hall or a library for ninety minutes — to dry out completely. Before 10:00 your only options are Dom Knigi, Bukvoed, the «Bottle», the Galeria food court and Sytny Market. For a full indoor day, see our rainy-day guide.
