Nevsky from the Admiralty to Vosstaniya Square: four kilometres in two hours

Nevsky Prospekt is the main street of St Petersburg, 4.5 km from the Admiralty spire to the Alexander Nevsky Lavra. The densest stretch is the first two kilometres from the Admiralty to Vosstaniya Square; a leisurely walk covers it in about two hours.

Nevsky at the Admiralty

🏛 Admiralty — Kazan Cathedral (0–1 km)

Start at the Admiralty spire — the city's main vertical. 300 metres on is the General Staff Building (Hermitage entrance via the Arch); another 200 metres is Stroganov Palace. Mid-stretch on the left: Kazan Cathedral with its semicircular colonnade; opposite is the House of Books with its glass globe, the old Singer building. This is Nevsky's main tourist point.

🌉 Kazan — Fontanka (1–2 km)

Past Kazan: Bank Bridge with griffins (to the right into the courtyard), Gostiny Dvor (the main 18th-century department store), the Passage covered arcade. On the Fontanka: Anichkov Bridge with the four Klodt horses; the Fountain House with Akhmatova's apartment is ten minutes north along the Fontanka.

🌳 Fontanka — Vosstaniya Square (2–4 km)

Past Anichkov, left is the Beloselsky-Belozersky Palace (red, with caryatids); on the right, the Literary Café restaurant. After 500 metres you reach Vosstaniya Square with its obelisk.

Worth leaving Nevsky at Kazan (towards the Griboedov Canal and the Savior on Spilled Blood), at the Fontanka (north to the Fountain House, south to Gorokhovaya) and at Liteyny (towards the Field of Mars and the Summer Garden). From any point back home, a RideClu transfer works.

🛏 Where to stay

Apartments on Nevsky itself and within two blocks are bookable on Tutkakdoma — walking distance to everything central.

If this is your first time in St Petersburg, bear two things in mind. Distances between the main sights are short, but autumn daylight is brief and rain arrives on no schedule. Plan your route around the lit half of the day, allow half an hour of buffer between stops, and bring a thermos and gloves for the evening. Carry a thermos of tea, an offline map and a charger; mobile internet in the centre is steady but can drop along the embankments.

On the ground, walking is easiest between adjacent blocks, with short taxi hops when it gets dark or wet. If you are travelling as a group or with children, arrange the evening transfer back to your flat ahead of time — late-night fares spike. Flats in the centre go fast at weekends: book a week ahead for Nevsky, the Petrograd Side or Vasilievsky.

St Petersburg rewards half-day visits rather than one long marathon. Pick a theme — a single museum, a district, a walk — and give it time. After the active part, a warm cafe, a bookshop or a swimming pool is as much part of the ritual as the sights themselves, especially in November.
