Vyborg as a Day Trip from Saint Petersburg: Trains, Castle Tickets and Hours in 2026

Vyborg is the easiest day trip from Saint Petersburg that still feels like another country — a medieval Swedish castle, a granite old town and a tower you can climb for the view. The catch is the timetable: the castle island stays open late, but the museum inside closes at 18:00 and does not open at all on Mondays and Tuesdays.

Getting there

Trains leave from Finlyandsky station in Saint Petersburg. The fast Lastochka takes 1 hour 15 minutes; an ordinary suburban train takes 2 hours 15 minutes. Tickets are sold at the station ticket office, and on weekends the Lastochka sells out in advance, so buy a day or two ahead.

Suburban fares in the Leningrad Region are set by distance for 2026: the standard tariff is 48.44 roubles for the first 14 kilometres plus 3.46 roubles per kilometre after that; the Lastochka tariff is 56.14 roubles for the first 14 kilometres plus 4.01 roubles per kilometre. Vyborg is roughly 130 rail kilometres away, so expect a few hundred roubles each way.

By car it is 120 kilometres and anywhere between 1.5 and 2.5 hours, depending on traffic. Two warnings from the museum itself: the road out of the city is jammed on Friday evenings, and the road back is jammed on Sunday evenings.

From the station to the castle

The railway and bus stations sit next to each other, and the castle is a 15 to 20 minute walk away — you will see it from the embankment. City buses 1, 6 and 12 cover the same distance in a couple of stops.

Tickets and opening hours in 2026

Three different things are sold separately, and this is where visitors get caught out:

The ticket office works from 9:15 to 20:00, yet sales close in stages: the combined ticket at 16:00, the tower at 19:30, individual exhibition halls at 17:15. Arrive after lunch and the combined ticket is already gone for the day.

One rule turns people away at the entrance: visitors under 16 are admitted only with an adult, and one adult may accompany no more than two children.

What else fits into a day

The same museum runs three more sites in town: the Knight's House on Vodnoy Zastavy Street 4 (10:00–18:00 daily, 350 roubles), the Town Hall Tower on Vyborgskaya 13A (Wednesday to Sunday, 10:00–18:00, 300 roubles, age 12 and over) and the Clock Tower on Krepostnaya 5 (weekends only, 10:30–17:30, 600 roubles with a guided visit, age 12 and over).

For lunch, the centre is full of cafés; the Round Tower restaurant on Market Square is itself a medieval fortification. Monrepos Park is the other reason people come to Vyborg, but its website was down while this guide was being checked, and its hours are seasonal — confirm them before you go, and treat the park as a separate two to three hours rather than an afterthought.

A workable plan

Take a morning Lastochka, be at the castle by eleven, do the museum and the tower before lunch, then walk the old town and take an afternoon or evening train back. Avoid Monday and Tuesday if the museum matters to you. If you drive back on a Sunday, leave Vyborg either before five in the afternoon or after nine in the evening.
