The Marble Palace, created in 1768–1785 especially for the Catherine the Great favorite Grigory Orlov, in course of time turned to the royal residence. The major construction mate- rial of the exterior and interior decorations was natural stone: nearly 30 sorts of granite and marble. In the halls of the pal- ace you can visit the permanent exposition: the unique Ludwig Museum in the Russian museum — the collection of Western and Russian art, and The Rzhevsky Brothers Collection, including paintings, sculptures and graphic arts of the XVIII-XX centuries, and decorative and applied arts as well.
